About Broadband
Broadband is the digital form of data communication. Broadband allows users to transmit data at much faster rates than “dial up” connections. There are a few types of Broadband, ADSL, Fibre Optic and most recently, Mobile Broadband otherwise known as HSDPA.

ADSL Broadband
Broadband via ADSL transits data using the original copper phone lines. Internet speeds can reach up to 24 megabits per second through an ADSL connection. The maximum speed you can achive depends on how far you are from your local exchange. All ADSL Broadband providers (BT, Plusnet, Tiscali, Eclipse, Virgin Medeia, Sky, Orange, Be, Madasafish, Vodafone, 3 and more) will require you to have an active phone line to use their Broadband service. Most internet providers require a BT line but you will often find the best deal is to take out a bundle deal.

Fibre Optic Broadband
Broadband via fibre optic cable offers the fastest Broadband services available. Internet providers who operate using fibre optic cables (Virgin Broadband) currently offer speeds of up to 50 megabits per second. Fibre optic Broadband is faster than ADSL because fibre optic cables use light to transmit data meaning Broadband data is transferred at the speed of light. BT are due to introduce fibre optic Broadband in the near future with speeds of up to 60Mb. Virgin Media have also stated that they plan to launch Broadband speeds of up to 200Mb in the near future.

Mobile Broadband (3G Broadband)
New to the Broadband arena is Mobile Broadband. Mobile Broadband transfers data via HSDPA commonly known as 3G Broadband. 3G Broadband offers speeds of up to 14.4Mb although in the UK you will usually find speeds or around 3.6Mb or 7.2Mb. Mobile internet providers (3, O2, Virgin Media, Vodafone) will all provide a USB dongle for you to access the internet on the go. While 3G Broadband does not offer 100% UK coverage, the coverage is good and it many people are replacing their home Broadband with 3G Broadband so they have Broadband wherever they go, even on holiday.
